Clayton never left the country, sources say. During that week, he inquired at the U.S. Embassy about the proper procedure for marrying a Soviet woman. Clayton was last spotted at a Soviet marriage registry. So far there’s no evidence that the missing engineer has turned over info on the supersecret electronic spying equipment in the embassy to the KGB, but officials in Washington are worried.
A special U.S. security team is now hunting for Clayton. But U.S. options are limited: Clayton has done nothing illegal, and since he was fired, he has no obligation to Washington. “We can’t go out and round him up,” says a U.S. official. “But it’s very strange he should walk away like this. He should talk to us and allay our concerns.”
