Venezuela Threatens Worthy Response To U.S. Navy Operations Near Coast

The U.S. Navy Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Nitze conducted what U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) described as a “freedom of navigation” operation this week to challenge “an excessive maritime claim” by Venezuela. SOUTHCOM said the warship did not enter the 12-nautical mile zone internationally recognized as Venezuela’s territorial limit, but the operation prompted condemnation from Caracas regardless. SOUTHCOM commander Navy Admiral Craig Faller said such operations would continue and that freedom of navigation missions “are the bedrock of ongoing security efforts, and essential to regional peace and stability....

Vengeance Of A Victim Race

The Serbs didn’t need to load Kosovars into boxcars to look bad. This is the nation that invented the term ‘’ethnic cleansing’’–as a wartime boast in 1991 when they were kicking Croats out of Croatia. In Belgrade, the wedding of a war criminal was the social occasion of 1995; even Orthodox bishops attended. Now, as the bombs fall, all norms of civilized behavior seem to have disappeared. On TV Palma, a commercial network, station manager Miodrag Vukovic lets loose with a torrent of gutter invective about Bill Clinton’s sex life....

Veterans In Higher Education Need Our Trust And Confidence Opinion

As servicemembers continue to take advantage of their education benefits, it is becoming more evident that supportive programs overshadow the qualities servicemembers bring to academic institutions. Support programs and campus services are ultra-focused on areas of weakness and vulnerability. Programs such as pre-college orientations, academic readiness boot camps, and many others tend to lead with a message of student veterans as a displaced category of students that need more help to succeed....

The Ferrari driver had seized pole on Saturday after posting a new lap record in qualifying, with his day boosted further as Hamilton suffered with a hydraulic problem, however it turned sour for Vettel 24 hours later. While appearing with Tim Russert on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” observers say, the vice president seemed distracted, looking over his shoulder repeatedly as if trying to see his own shadow. A review of the broadcast indicates that Vice President Cheney appeared to see his shadow, and shortly afterward concluded the interview with Russert “abruptly,” in the words of one observer. Cheney remained in Washington through the president’s State of the Union Message Tuesday night, but then returned to his secure, undisclosed location, which is believed to be underground....

Through the first two weeks of the new campaign, though, the supposed title hopefuls and tankers aren’t following the script. After Tuesday night’s games, the Jazz and Spurs are near the top of the Western Conference standings. The Clippers, Heat, Nets and Warriors, meanwhile, find themselves outside of not just the NBA Playoff bracket, but also the Play-In Tournament group.
