Venezuela Threatens Worthy Response To U.S. Navy Operations Near Coast
The U.S. Navy Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Nitze conducted what U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) described as a “freedom of navigation” operation this week to challenge “an excessive maritime claim” by Venezuela. SOUTHCOM said the warship did not enter the 12-nautical mile zone internationally recognized as Venezuela’s territorial limit, but the operation prompted condemnation from Caracas regardless.
